Description

from Meet the Met: Metropolitan Museum of Art Tour
The Metropolitan Museum of Art has one of the largest collections in the world, so trying to see all the highlights in a single visit is difficult, to say the least. Not when you take a Met tour with an expert Walks guide, however! In a little over three hours, they'll lead you on an epic journey through the history of global art.

On this specially-planned route you'll step inside the Temple of Dendur, which was transported intact from Egypt; visit an Ancient Roman bedroom that survived the destruction of Pompeii; ponder the use of color in French Expressionist art; learn about ceremonial clothing from Papua New Guinea; find peace surrounded by Monet's *Water Lilies*; and marvel at masterpieces by a plethora of artists, including Van Gogh, Rembrandt, Picasso, and Vermeer.

As you move through the Met Museum, your expert guide will help you decode and interpret the art, as well as tell you the stories and context behind each work. This isn't just a walk through a great art collection; it's a journey around the many cultures of the globe, allowing you to soak up a rounded sample of the very best that artists have produced over the last 5,000 years. You'll also visit the Met's lovely rooftop garden, for incredible views over Central Park.

Enjoy American artworks including Sargent's controversial *Madame X*, the iconic *Washington Crossing the Delaware* and view international masterpieces, like those by Vermeer, Rembrandt, and Jacques-Louis David.

With small groups of just 15 people or fewer, you'll have unparalleled access to your guide, whose encyclopedic knowledge of art and history will unlock the many worlds of art contained in the Met.

Frequently Asked Questions about Meet the Met: Metropolitan Museum of Art Tour

Where does the tour meet?

The tour meets in the main lobby of The Metropolitan Museum of Art at 1000 5th Ave., to the right of the information desk in front of the large seated Pharaoh, or as confirmed in your confirmation email. Please arrive 15 minutes prior to the tour start time. Tour guides will hold a sign with the Walks logo and “MEET HERE” on it.

How long is this tour?

This tour is approximately 3 hours.

What if I'm late?

If you are running late, it's best to contact the tour operator via the phone number on your e-ticket or their website so they can reach out to your guide. This is not always possible for all tours - their guides are with other clients and are already into the tour (they ask them not to use their phones during their tour). But in some cases, a few minutes of delays can be remedied. Most times, guides leave the meeting point within 5 minutes of the tour start time.

What is included in the tour?

The tour includes pre-arranged admission to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, a local English-speaking art historian guide, and an expertly guided walking tour. The tours are all given in English. They don’t offer multi-language tours.

What exhibits will we be visiting?

You will be seeing the Temple of Dendur, 'Washington Crossing the Delaware', 'Madame X', Sculpture Gallery, Ancient Pompeiian Room, Greek and Roman Statuary, and the Met Rooftop (seasonal) overlooking Central Park. All of the pieces listed in the tour description are viewable most of the time. However, like nearly all great museums, the Met occasionally allows certain works to travel in temporary exhibitions or be lent to other institutions. The Met also allows private parties to book out certain rooms for events (most commonly the Temple of Dendur), rendering them inaccessible for the duration of the event. If one of the listed pieces cannot be viewed, the guide, at their discretion, will substitute another piece of important value. The rooftop garden is only open from May through October, weather permitting. On other months your Met tour will include extra artworks instead, spending more time inside the Museum.

Is transportation included?

Transportation is not included in this tour.

Is parking provided?

No. However, there is street parking and parking lots nearby for your perusal.

Are there any age/physical/health/etc. restrictions for this tour?

There aren't any age restrictions for this tour. This is a walking tour and you can expect to walk a fair amount. Guests should be able to walk at a moderate pace without difficulty.

I use a wheelchair; can I take this tour?

Yes. The Met is entirely wheelchair accessible. However, if you cannot climb the stairs of the central entrance to reach the meeting point, there is a ground-level entrance one block south, near the intersection of 81st street and 5th avenue. Tell the desk you need to use the elevator to meet a group in the main lobby (at the Pharaoh statue), which will secure your entrance ticket. They will provide you with a temporary pass and help direct you upstairs.

Can I bring my camera?

Yes. Non-flash photography is allowed. However, flash photography and video cameras cannot be used inside the Museum. Selfie sticks are also prohibited.

What should I bring?

You may bring your camera and a photo ID.

What should I wear?

Visitors should wear comfortable walking shoes and attire appropriate for the day’s weather forecast.

Should I bring the confirmation email?

A physical or digital copy of this confirmation email is not required to join your tour. Your guide (or tour coordinator) will have your name in their database, so as long as you know the name on the booking, you're set!
